SUSHI RESTAURANTS IN NORTH COUNTY SD

fresh sushi rolls

When I first moved to Carlsbad, I was excited to have more sushi in my life! I was so thrilled to finally be living in the finest city in America. I thought I was living the dream until one day this gentleman broke the news to me that Carlsbad is not quite San Diego. Can you blame my ignorance? I was new and naive. I had to experience it myself and I learned that North County is still finding its way to diversifying its culinary culture.

There are several emerging Asian fusion, Mediterranean cuisine, eclectic Baja influences, a handful of Island food, Filipino restaurants, and Mexican restaurants. However, compared to San Diego County there are much more authentic cuisines to choose from.

At that time, I had a crippling craving for sushi and every Asian food you can think of. So in 6 months, I moved to Mira Mesa with my childhood best friend. We were in the heart of Filipino town and just 15-20 minutes away from downtown San Diego. And as a foodie, I can honestly say that the restaurant and bar scene was definitely popping!

My boyfriend also moved from North County to be closer to me. We went on sushi dates after sushi dates and boy it was good! When we moved in together in Kearny Mesa, we found more options to choose from. However, we only truly had our top 5 favorite SUSHI RESTAURANTS NEAR SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.  After 3 years, I’d like to say I’ve exhausted every Asian restaurant we could find but there were always new businesses opening. It was exciting! However, we needed a change and we were ready to go back to North County.

Here’s what I learned this past year: North County is no chopped liver. You just have to look harder for these hidden gems. There is still so much to explore, but if you’re having those cravings like me here are my top 3 favorite sushi restaurants in North County San Diego so you don’t have to sweat it.

Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub

1815 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054

One of the key characteristics I love about North County is the eclectic restaurants in the area and this sushi spot features simple yet complex menus that include diverse cuts of fish or as they’d say, “lesser-known fish species.” If you’re into sustainable food systems like me, you will also enjoy fresh backyard vegetables and creative dishes made to reduce waste. This is no typical sushi joint. As someone who loves to explore new flavors and textures, I highly recommend you visit Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub.

Tabu Sushi

2215 S Melrose Dr STE 104, Vista, CA 92081

There’s a good chance you’ve passed by “Tabu Sushi” but the Vista location is truly something special. New owners Yousif and Stephen are dedicated to providing locals with fresh fish and showcasing their sushi chef’s creativity. Just ask them to make you whatever they desire and you’ll get a bang for your buck without going omakase-style. This neighborhood sushi restaurant will surely surprise you!

Umami Japanese Restaurant

251 N City Dr Suite 122, San Marcos, CA 92078

Umami in Japanese means “deliciousness.” It is the 5th flavor that brings your taste buds to life. As someone who loves rich and savory dishes, this new eatery in North City accomplishes all that and more with its extensive menu. From Sushi Muffins to Garlic Butter Shrimp, Vegan Omakase, and Gluten-Free options, everyone gets a taste for their liking.

Bonus! They have a pet-friendly patio. When was the last time you enjoyed sushi outdoors with your dog?
